Tutorial: step by step install WordPress on localhost

After installing XAMPP on localhost, now we can proceed to install WordPress on localhost to create a virtual host on the network’s website yourselves (default in this section, I use port 80 with XAMPP).

Before installation, you need to known a website or blog must be stored in one folder or hosting on localhost, as the example here is localhost. And working mechanism of WordPress is no different, everything needed to install WordPress will be put into one particular folder. You on the path C:\xampp\htdocs\ and create a folder with  up to you with the name option you want (example here is such wordpress)

WordPress Folder is also the root of domain (http://localhost/wordpress), it’s easily manage and you can add virtual domains on if you like.

Step 1: Download WordPress Open Source

First you download the latest version of WordPress source code at https://wordpress.org

After download file zip then extract wordpress folder into C:\xampp\htdocs. Open C:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress will as below:

Note: you can rename wordpress folder to other name if you want.

Step 2: Create new Database

Open browser and input http://localhost/phpmyadmin (if use port 8015 then type http://localhost:8015/phpmyadmin), and then click Database menu:

In the Create database, you need to create a database name, select the listbox Collation is utf8_unicode_ci (allow database store text with unicode format) as shown below and press the Create button

When create database completed then look at the left side menu, if it appears to the newly created database name was successful. So now, you may have a database with information such as:

  • Database Host: localhost
  • Database user: root
  • Database password: “empty”
  • Database name: dbwordpress

Step 3: Install WordPress and setup website

  • Open browser with url http://localhost/wordpress . Now, it appears the menu language setting for WordPress, select the English (or your language) and press Continue
  • In the next step, it will remind you not to proceed wp-config-file-wp-config.php and sample.php to declare information on that database. Click Let’s Go to press it yourself do it for you.
  • Fill information Database as below:

Submit and then click Run the install button, after that input information as below (remember username and password to login admin page to control or manage your website) and click install WordPress button

Appear success screen and click Log in button to login admin page to manage your website (login with username and password was created above).

Open browser with http://localhost/wordpress/ to see demo your website, http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin to enter page admin
